To find the correct shower valve replacement, you must remove the handle and inspect the cartridge inside. Visual identification is key, as many brands use similar brass valves.

The "splines" are the teeth on the top stem where the handle grips. You MUST count them (e.g., 20 teeth, 24 teeth). If you get this wrong, your handle will not fit the new flow cartridge.

Shower Valve Sizing Guide
Use this table to check your dimensions. The most important measures are the overall length and the spline count.

Types of Shut Off Valves
Ceramic Disc (Quarter Turn)
The most common modern shower on off valve. It opens fully with just a 90-degree turn of the handle. If it drips, the ceramic discs inside are worn.
Compression (Washer)
Found in older showers. You have to wind the handle multiple times to open it. These use rubber washers which can perish over time.
Diverter Cartridges
Complex valves that switch water between outlets (e.g., overhead head vs. handset). These are longer and more specific to the brand.

Why is my shower dripping?
A dripping shower is almost always caused by the flow cartridge (the on/off valve) letting water pass, not the thermostat. Replacing the flow cartridge usually solves the drip instantly.
Are universal shower flow cartridges available?
Rarely. While many look similar, the spline count and length vary. It is safer to match the visual design and measurements exactly rather than assuming a "universal" fit.
What is the difference between On/Off and Thermostatic?
The thermostatic cartridge controls the temperature (Hot/Cold). The flow valve controls the volume and turns the water On/Off. If you have a drip, you need the flow valve. If the water is cold, you need the thermostat.
How do I remove the old shower valve?
First, isolate the water supply. Remove the handle (look for a grub screw). Use a box spanner or adjustable wrench to unscrew the old valve counter-clockwise.
