A tap base plate or base ring sits under the tap body where it meets the sink or worktop. It covers the tap hole, stops water tracking down between the tap and the surface, and gives the installation a neat finish. Most people only need a replacement when the original has cracked, corroded, or gone missing, or when a new tap has a smaller base than the hole left by the old one. Kitchen tap base plates and bath tap base plates are the most commonly replaced, though basin taps use the same fitting types. What measurements do I need to order the right base plate or base ring?
You need two dimensions: the internal diameter, which has to clear the tap body, and the external diameter, which determines how much surface it covers around the hole. On a base ring or plinth, also note the height. The easiest approach is to take those measurements from the part you are replacing. If the original is missing, measure the tap body at its base and the tap hole diameter in your surface.
My new tap has a smaller base than the hole left by the old one. What do I need?
A cover plate or escutcheon. These have a larger outer diameter than a standard base plate and are made for situations where the tap base does not cover the full tap hole. Measure the hole diameter and check the outer diameter of the cover plate before ordering to confirm there is enough overlap to seal properly. Alternatively, a tap hole reducer inserts into the hole itself to reduce the opening diameter to match the new tap shank size.
Do I need a reinforcing plate under my kitchen tap?
Only if your worktop is thin or shows any flex around the tap hole when the fixing nut is tightened. Solid timber, thick stone, and standard stainless steel sinks do not normally need one. Thin laminate worktops and some composite surfaces do. If the worktop material is less than around 30mm thick at the tap hole, a reinforcing plate is worth fitting to prevent cracking over time.
Can I replace just the base plate without changing the tap?
Yes, on most taps the base plate, ring, or plinth is a separate component that comes off independently. Turn off the water supply, remove the tap from the surface, and the base plate usually unclips or unscrews from the tap body. The exception is where the base is moulded as part of the tap body itself. If you are not sure, send us a photo and we will confirm before you order.
I cannot find a base plate listed for my tap brand. Can you still help?
Yes. Many tap base plates and rings are not listed individually by brand because the same component fits across multiple manufacturers. Email us the brand name, tap range if you know it, and the measurements of the part you need. We can check whether we have a direct replacement or a compatible alternative that will fit your tap and surface.
