Caps and Indices for Shower Valves
Shower Valve Caps Sized to the Valve, Not the Brand
Concealed caps cover the back of a shower valve where it meets the wall. Size is what matters here. A 42mm cap will not seat in a 45mm housing, even when both come from the same brand and finish.
Mira Rada concealed caps are listed by valve model and diameter, with 42mm caps for the Rada 17 and Rada 25, 45mm caps for older Rada 17 valves, and 50mm caps for larger Rada bodies. The simplest way to order the right one is to remove the existing cap, measure across the face, and check the model code stamped on the valve body.
Indices Supplied as Brand-Matched Replacements
Indices are the small discs that sit on the front of a handle to mark hot, cold, on, off or the diverter setting. They are brand-and-model specific. A Bristan 1901 hot and cold indice will not fit an Ideal Standard Markwik handle, even where both are 20mm. Indices on this page are listed by the brand and range they were made for. Read the part number off the back of your existing indice if it has one, or match against the brand and range of the handle it sits on.
Blanking Caps and Cover Buttons When the Indice Is Missing
Not every handle takes an indice. Some valves are blanked off where the second indice would sit, particularly on single-outlet handles or where one side of a hot and cold pair is redundant. Three parts cover that gap depending on the valve: a plain cover button without a logo, a blanking cap that fills the recess flush, or a plain indice cap that takes the place of a hot or cold disc. Bristan 1901 blanking caps, Ideal Standard Piccolo and Markwik chrome cover buttons, and Hudson Reed plain indice caps are all listed under this category.
Frequently Asked Questions About Shower Valve Caps and Indices
Does this page cover shower valve caps or shower valve handles?
This page covers the small parts that sit on top of or around the handle: concealed caps, blanking caps, cover buttons and the hot, cold or diverter indices. The handle itself is a separate part. Levers, knobs and the rotating control assembly are listed on the Shower Valve Handles and Levers page. If your handle has come loose or the lever has snapped, that is a handle replacement, not a cap or indice replacement.
How do I know which shower valve cap fits my valve?
Concealed caps are sized to the valve body, so size is what matters. Remove the existing cap and measure across the face. Mira Rada caps come in 42mm, 45mm and 50mm versions and they are not interchangeable. The model code stamped on the valve body confirms the correct size. If you cannot read it, email a clear photo of the valve and the old cap and our team will identify it for you.
What is the difference between an indice, a cover button and a blanking cap?
An indice is a small disc on the front of the handle that marks hot, cold, on, off or the diverter setting. A cover button sits in the same recess but carries no marking, used where the brand or installer chose a plain finish. A blanking cap fills a recess flush, used where the second indice position is redundant. All three are brand-and-model specific. A Bristan 1901 indice will not fit an Ideal Standard handle.
