Toilet Pan & Flush Pipe Connectors
What Are Toilet Pan & Flush Pipe Connectors?
These fittings form the critical watertight seals at the back of your toilet. Flush pipe connectors join the cistern (tank) to the toilet bowl, delivering clean water for the flush. Pan connectors (also called waste manifolds) connect the toilet bowl outlet to your home's soil pipe to carry waste away. Both are essential for preventing leaks and blocking sewer odours.
💡 When to Replace Your Connectors
Replace immediately if you notice water pooling on the floor behind the toilet or detect sewage smells. Rubber seals degrade and harden over time, leading to hairline cracks or perished fins that no longer create a tight seal against the ceramic.
Types of Connectors
There are two distinct categories of connector required for most toilet installations.
Flexible Pan Connectors
Also known as "flexi" or concertina connectors. These can be bent and extended to fit awkward angles where the toilet outlet doesn't perfectly align with the soil pipe.
Best for: Non-standard layouts or tight spaces
Internal Flush Cones
A rubber seal that sits inside the hole at the back of the toilet pan. The flush pipe pushes into this rubber cone to create the seal. Common on older low-level cisterns.
Best for: Standard low-level toilets
Offset / Angled Connectors
Rigid connectors available in 90° bends or slight "swan neck" offsets. These provide a more permanent and smoother internal flow than flexible versions.
Best for: Permanent, straight-forward installs
External Flush Connectors
A plastic finned collar that grips the outside of the toilet pan inlet. Often used on modern close-coupled suites where internal cones won't fit.
Best for: Modern close-coupled toilets
How to Choose the Right Size
Sizing is standardised in the UK, but variations exist. Measuring the existing pipe diameters is crucial before ordering.
| Component | What to Measure | Standard UK Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Flush Pipe | Outer diameter of the pipe coming from cistern | 1.5" (approx 38mm) or 2" (approx 50mm - rarer) |
| Pan Spigot | Outer diameter of the ceramic toilet outlet | Usually 102mm - 108mm (Standard Pan Connectors fit this range) |
| Soil Pipe | Inner diameter of the drain pipe in the wall/floor | 110mm (4 inches) is the UK standard |
💡 Pro Tip: Lubrication is Key
Never use silicone sealant on rubber fins; it can cause them to slip out of place or degrade. Use silicone grease or simple soapy water to help the rubber fins slide easily into the pipework for a perfect seal.

Fitting a Pan Connector
- Remove the old connector and clean the ceramic spigot and soil pipe thoroughly. Debris can prevent a good seal.
- Push the finned end of the connector into the soil pipe first. Ensure it goes in straight to avoid folding the rubber fins.
- Align the large rubber cuff with the toilet pan spigot. Lubricate the seal with water or silicone grease.
- Push the toilet back securely until the spigot sits fully inside the rubber cuff. Check for kinks.
