Shower Valve Handles & Levers
Shower valve handles, levers and control knobs, supplied to replace a worn or broken handle. Lever, round knob and paddle styles, sized for thermostatic mixers, manual mixers and single-handle valves across the range. Get the old handle off first. The fitting underneath, not the valve body itself, is what dictates which replacement will sit on the spindle correctly.

Replacement Handles for Shower Valves
Handles, Levers and Control Knobs Explained
Shower valve handles come in three shapes. A lever sticks out horizontally and pulls up or rotates to set the flow. A round knob sits flush against the wall plate and turns. Paddles are flat. Customers also call these knobs, dials, control knobs and turners, but the trade word for any of them is handle. The shape is cosmetic. What actually matters is the fitting underneath that grips the spindle, because that fitting is what decides if a replacement will sit on the valve at all.
Identifying Shower Valve Handles Before Ordering
Pull the existing handle off and look at the fitting it sat on. You are looking for one of the following:
- Spline broach. Concentric ridges around a round hole. Count the splines, twenty and twenty-four are the usual figures.
- D-shape spindle with grub screw. A flat side on a round shaft, held by a small hex screw on the side of the handle.
- Proprietary fitting. A shaped collar, square drive or branded clip that only matches one make of valve.
Photograph the fitting and the spindle. Two millimetres on the spindle and you have got the wrong replacement, so if it is splined, count the splines and measure the diameter at the base before you order anything. The handle has to match the spindle, not the valve body.
Thermostatic or Manual: Which Handle Style You Need
Look at the wall. Count the handles already fitted to the valve, because that count is what tells you which type of replacement you need to order.
Two handles (thermostatic)
One handle sets temperature. The other controls flow. Order them as a pair where the finish needs to match across both, because mixing a temperature handle from one set with a flow handle from another rarely looks right on the wall.
One handle (manual mixer)
A single lever or knob does both jobs at once, setting temperature when you swivel it and setting flow when you lift or rotate. One handle to order, one finish to match.
A faulty temperature handle on a thermostatic mixer can be ordered on its own. Check the finish matches the surviving flow handle before you do.
Frequently Asked Questions About Shower Valve Handles
Does this page cover the handle itself or the cap on top?
This page covers the handle, lever or control knob you grip and turn. The small badge or disc that sits on top of the handle, often marked with hot and cold or temperature numbers, is a separate part. That sits on the Shower Valve Indices and Caps page. Loose, cracked or worn handle, you are on the right page. If only the badge is missing or faded, head to the indices page instead.
How do I know which shower valve handle fits mine?
Pull the old handle off and look at the spindle it was sitting on. A round shaft with a flat side takes a D-shape grub-screw handle. A shaft with concentric ridges is a spline broach, in which case you need to count the splines and measure the diameter at the base before you order. A shaped or branded collar means the handle is proprietary to that valve. Photograph the spindle. The handle has to match it, not the valve body.
Why are there two handles on some showers and one on others?
Two-handle showers are thermostatic mixers, which split temperature and flow into separate controls so the temperature stays steady when you adjust the volume. Single-handle showers are manual mixers. One lever or knob does both jobs at once on a manual: swivel for temperature, lift or rotate for flow. Count the handles fitted to the wall and you know which type you have. Replacement pairs should match in finish across both.
