Shower Union Fixings
Shower union fixings and replacement union nuts for the chrome swivel nuts and unions that join shower pipework to valves and exposed fittings. A shower union is the part that lets you tighten or release the pipework without rotating the rest of the assembly. Most are a captive nut over a tapered seat, in chrome, satin or brass finishes. We supply unions for current and older exposed shower kits.
SHOWER UNION FIXINGS | BUYING GUIDE
What is a Shower Union Fixing?
A shower union is a chrome (or sometimes satin or brass) swivel nut that joins shower pipework to a valve or exposed fitting. The nut sits over a tapered seat, allowing the joint to be tightened by spinning the nut alone, without rotating the pipework or the valve body.
Unions appear most often on exposed shower kits, traditional brassware and any installation where the visible pipework is finished or finely aligned. A failed or seized union is replaced as a single nut-and-seat assembly, not as separate parts.
Shower Union Sizes & Finishes Explained
UK shower unions almost always use 1/2 inch BSP threads, matching the supply pipework on a typical domestic shower install. Some traditional and high-flow valve sets use 3/4 inch BSP, particularly where the supply has been upgraded to 22mm copper. Confirm the thread by measuring the existing nut or by counting threads against a 1/2 inch reference.
Finishes include chrome (the standard UK fitting), brushed nickel and brass. Match the union to the rest of the visible brassware on the shower; a chrome union on a brass valve looks out of place even when functionally identical.
Replacement unions are stocked in matched pairs for kits where two unions sit either side of the valve. If the existing pipework size doesn't match a new valve, a thread adapter from our shower hose connectors range will solve the mismatch. Valve cartridges, handles and trim parts often replaced at the same time sit in the wider shower spares hub.
Shower Union Fixing FAQs
What is a shower union?
A shower union is a swivel nut and seat assembly that joins two pieces of pipework, typically the supply pipe to a shower valve or the valve to an exposed riser. The nut spins independently of the pipework, so the joint can be tightened without rotating the rest of the assembly. Common on exposed shower kits and on older traditional installations.
Are shower unions standard sizes?
Most UK shower unions use 1/2 inch BSP threads, matching the supply pipework on a typical domestic shower. A smaller number use 3/4 inch BSP, particularly on traditional and exposed valve sets. Measure the existing nut across the flats, or count threads against a 1/2 inch reference, before ordering.
What does a shower union do that a normal nut can't?
A standard nut grips the pipework, so tightening it rotates the whole assembly. A union nut spins freely on the pipework, so tightening it pulls the joint together without disturbing the rest of the install. This matters on exposed shower kits where the visible pipework is finished and rotating it would scratch or misalign the trim.
