Identification and compatibility questions answered
How do I know which thermostatic cartridge my shower valve needs?
Thermostatic cartridges are brand and model specific, and in some cases date specific. Abacus CVD concealed valve cartridges differ between units made before and after January 2015, and the CVP and EZ-Box variants take different cartridges again. If you have the valve model number, that is the most reliable starting point. If not, check any paperwork from the original installation. For Abacus valves, the manufacture date is usually printed inside the valve cover. A shower valve washer replacement is often needed alongside the cartridge on older valves. If you are unsure, email us a photo of the valve and we will confirm the correct cartridge before you order.
What is a shower head plastic insert and how do I replace it?
The plastic insert inside a shower head is typically a spray cassette or varispray mechanism: the component that controls the spray pattern and distributes water through the nozzle holes. When jets block or the spray pattern becomes uneven and descaling does not fix it, the cassette is usually the part to replace rather than the whole head. For Aqualisa shower heads, the shower head plastic insert is the varispray cassette, which simply unclips from inside the head face. Measure the cassette diameter before ordering to confirm compatibility. Replacement cassettes are listed in the Shower Head Spares sub-category.
Do you stock spare parts for older or discontinued shower valves and heads?
Yes. A number of discontinued shower parts are stocked here. Aqualisa shower head spares include varispray cassettes for heads made between 1996 and 1999. Abacus thermostatic cartridges cover valve variants that pre-date 2015 and 2017, which are not available through most trade counters. A&J Gummers complete cartridges are also stocked for older valve systems. If you cannot find your specific part listed, email us the model name or take a photo of the existing part, and we will check whether we hold it.
What is the difference between shower valve spares and electric shower spare parts?
Shower valve spares are internal components for mixer and thermostatic shower valves, the separate wall-mounted unit that controls water temperature and flow by blending hot and cold supplies. Electric shower spare parts are components for self-contained electric shower units that heat cold water on demand using an internal element. The two systems share no common parts. If your shower has a separate hot water supply and a valve on the wall, you need shower valve spares. If it runs from a cold supply only and has a kW rating on its casing, you need power shower spares or electric shower spares.
