Questions About Geberit Flush Valves
Identification, compatibility and replacement guidance for Geberit flush valve types.
What is the difference between a Geberit syphon and a Geberit flush valve?
They are two physically different mechanisms. A syphon lifts water over a U-bend to create the flush and is found in older UK cisterns with a float arm and lever handle. A flush valve opens a seal at the base of the valve body to release water directly into the bowl. If your Geberit flush valve is leaking persistently into the bowl between flushes, the seal or valve itself needs replacing. This is a flush valve fault, not a syphon fault. The two are not interchangeable.
How do I identify which Geberit flush valve type I have?
Geberit prints the type number on the valve body itself. Look for a label or moulded text reading Type 230, 260, 280, 290 or similar. If the number has worn off, the valve height and actuator connection type are the most reliable identifiers. Type 280 and 290 valves are taller than Type 260. If your cistern has a pneumatic push-button on the wall rather than a handle on the lid, you have a concealed cistern valve, most likely a Type 212 or Type 290.
Does Geberit make a flush valve for concealed cisterns?
Yes. The Geberit Type 212 flush valve is the standard replacement for Alpha concealed cisterns. Types 280 and 290 also have configurations for concealed cistern applications. If your concealed cistern flush valve is leaking or no longer releasing fully, confirm whether your frame is a Geberit Sigma, Duofix or Alpha system before ordering, as each uses a different valve configuration. Access is through the wall panel. The valve type number is printed on the body and is the only reliable way to confirm the correct replacement.
What does ATS 5200.017 mean on a Geberit flush valve?
ATS 5200.017 is an Australian and New Zealand certification code that appears on Geberit flush valves sold in those markets. It is printed on the valve body alongside the Geberit type designation. If your valve carries this code, it is a Geberit product and the type number printed elsewhere on the body determines which replacement part you need. The ATS 5200.016 designation refers to the single flush certification variant of the same standard.
Can I replace just the flush valve seal or washer rather than the whole valve?
Yes, for most Geberit flush valve types. Replacement seals, base sealing washers and rigid base washers are stocked separately and cost considerably less than a full valve replacement. If the valve body is intact but the cistern is dripping persistently into the bowl, a seal or washer replacement is the correct starting point. If the valve body itself is cracked or the mechanism no longer releases fully, a full flush valve replacement is needed.
