The internal ceramic mechanism wears over time and when it goes the tap either drips constantly, stiffens at the lever, or loses the ability to regulate temperature. Identifying Your Mixer Tap Cartridge: Size, Type and Terminology

Overall cartridge height
Remove the cartridge and measure tip to base. Common heights run 35mm to 70mm. This is your primary matching dimension. Get this wrong and the replacement will not seat correctly.
Body diameter
Measure across the widest point of the cartridge body. Most monoblock mixer cartridges are 25mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm or 45mm in diameter. This determines which valve body the cartridge will fit.
Base type: flat or peg leg
Turn the cartridge over. A flat base sits flush with no protrusions. A peg leg has one or two small pins that locate into slots in the valve seat. The two types are not interchangeable.

Identification, compatibility and replacement guidance.
Are mixer tap cartridges a standard size, or do I need to match the original exactly?
Mixer tap cartridges are not universal. Body diameter and overall height vary between tap models and manufacturers, and a 35mm cartridge will not fit a valve seat designed for a 40mm body. Before ordering, remove the existing cartridge and measure the body diameter and overall height. If you have the original part number from the tap or the cartridge itself, search by that directly. What is the difference between a flat base cartridge and a peg leg cartridge?
The difference is in how the cartridge locates into the valve seat. A flat base cartridge has a smooth underside and drops straight in, held by the retaining nut above it. A peg leg cartridge has one or two small pins on the base that slot into corresponding holes in the valve body, stopping the cartridge from rotating under use. The two types are not interchangeable. Turn the old cartridge over before ordering and check the base.
Do you stock shower mixer tap cartridge replacements and double lever mixer tap cartridges?
Yes. Bath shower mixer tap cartridges are stocked within this section, including diverter cartridges for taps with an integral shower handset switch. Double lever mixer tap cartridge replacement options are also stocked for taps with separate hot and cold controls. For double lever taps, check whether your model takes two separate cartridges or a single dual-flow unit, as this varies by tap. If you are unsure, email a photo of the tap and the existing cartridge to sales@bathroomspareparts.co.uk.
Do you stock cartridges for discontinued brands like Bathstore?
Yes. Bathstore closed in 2019 but BSP continues to stock cartridges for Blade, Contour, Sublime, Form, Parador and Track range taps. Search by the Bathstore model name or by the part number printed on the original cartridge body. Armitage Shanks cartridges including Sandringham, Fairline, Halo and Contour 21 models are also stocked. If the original cartridge has no visible markings, remove it, measure the body diameter and height, and contact us with those dimensions and a photo.
What does a mixer tap cartridge replacement typically cost?
Tap cartridge replacement cost varies considerably by brand and type. A generic monoblock cartridge for a standard single lever basin or kitchen mixer tap costs a fraction of what a branded OEM cartridge does for a named manufacturer like Armitage Shanks, Franke or Ideal Standard. In all cases a cartridge replacement costs significantly less than a new tap, particularly for branded sanitaryware where a like-for-like tap replacement runs to multiples of the cartridge price. Most monoblock cartridge replacements can be completed without a plumber.
