Shower Door Hinges
Shower door hinges and replacement pivot hinges for quadrant, pivot, bifold and walk-in shower enclosures. Hinges fail through corrosion, dropped doors, broken pins and stripped fixings. Replacement hinges restore the door's swing and seal without replacing the whole enclosure. We supply metal pivot hinges, glass-to-glass hinges and wall-to-glass hinges in common UK sizes, including older and discontinued patterns.
SHOWER DOOR HINGES | BUYING GUIDE
Types of Shower Door Hinge
Shower door hinges come in four broad mounting patterns. The right replacement depends on how the existing hinge attaches to the door and frame, not on brand alone.
Top and bottom pivot hinges
Metal hinges that take the door's full weight on a vertical pivot pin. One sits at the top corner, one at the bottom. Common on framed pivot doors and many quadrants.
Glass-to-glass hinges
Two clamps connected by a hinge knuckle, each clamp gripping a panel of glass. Common where two glass panels meet at a corner or where a door joins a fixed return panel on a quadrant or walk-in.
Wall-to-glass hinges
A wall plate fixed to tile or panel on one side, a glass clamp on the other. Used where a frameless or semi-frameless door hangs directly from the wall, with no top or bottom rail to share the load.
Bifold and folding door hinges
Double-knuckle hinges that allow the door to fold back on itself. Two pivot pins per hinge. Replacement is usually a matched pair, since folding doors put even wear on both top and bottom hinges.
Common Hinge Failures and What They Mean
-
Door drops at one corner
Pivot pin worn, or hinge plate worked loose at the fixings. Replace the hinge or, on a glass-to-glass clamp, retighten the clamp screws first to confirm.
-
Hinge clicks, grates or feels stiff
The bearing surface inside the hinge has failed, usually through corrosion or limescale. Lubricant gives a short-term improvement; replacement is the proper fix.
-
Water leaks past the hinge
The gasket between hinge and glass has perished, or the seal at the wall plate has detached. Replacement hinges include a fresh gasket. See our shower screen seals if the door seal is also worn.
-
Screw heads stripped on the hinge plate
The hinge will not tighten, and replacement is the only safe option since a loose hinge holding glass is a hazard.
-
Visible corrosion or pitting on the finish
Surface corrosion spreads to fixings and to the pivot pin. Replace before the hinge fails mechanically.
How to Identify Your Hinge for Replacement
Take photos of the hinge in place, ideally one front-on showing the plate or clamp, one side-on showing the knuckle, and one of the back showing any markings or stamped numbers. Measure the plate dimensions or clamp opening, the centre-to-centre fixing-hole distance, and the glass thickness with a ruler.
If the hinge is mounted glass-to-glass, note the clamp opening angle. Common values are 90 degrees, 135 degrees or fully adjustable. The opening angle affects which replacement fits a given enclosure shape, particularly on quadrants and pentagonals.
If your enclosure is older than ten years or the manufacturer name has worn off, the hinge is the most reliable identification point. Send the photos and measurements to our team and we will compare against current and discontinued stock. Replacement metal hinges, plastic pivot blocks and matching door rollers are often replaced together when refurbishing an older enclosure. The wider shower door parts range covers everything else on the door, and shower spares covers the valve and handset parts most commonly replaced alongside a hinge job.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a shower door hinge?
A shower door hinge is the metal fitting that lets the door pivot open and shut while supporting the weight of the glass. Most enclosures use either a top-and-bottom pair of pivot hinges, or a set of glass-to-glass or wall-to-glass clamp hinges. Bifold doors use a double-knuckle hinge that lets the door fold back on itself.
How do I know which shower hinge to buy?
Identify the mounting type first: pivot, glass-to-glass or wall-to-glass. Then measure the plate or clamp dimensions, the glass thickness and the centre-to-centre distance between fixing holes. Brand markings sometimes survive on the back of the hinge. If the hinge is older than ten years and has no markings, photograph it from three angles and send it to our team for matching.
Are shower door hinges interchangeable across brands?
Rarely. Plate sizes, pivot pin diameters and glass-clamp openings differ from one manufacturer to the next, and from one generation of an enclosure to the next within the same brand. A hinge from a 2010 Coram quadrant rarely fits a 2020 Coram quadrant. Always measure or send a photo before ordering.
What is the difference between pivot hinges and pivot blocks?
Pivot hinges are metal fittings that take the door's weight on a metal pin and bearing. They sit at the top and bottom of the door and bolt through the glass. Pivot blocks are smaller plastic components that sit inside or under the hinge to take wear, or in some enclosures replace the metal hinge entirely. See our shower door pivot blocks range if your fitting is a small plastic block rather than a metal hinge.
How long do shower door hinges last?
Typical service life is eight to fifteen years. Hinges in hard-water areas wear faster as limescale builds up around the pivot pin. Hinges on heavy walk-in panels last longer than those on bifold doors that are opened and closed multiple times per day. Replace at the first sign of dropping, grinding or visible corrosion rather than waiting for total failure, since a falling glass door is dangerous.
